How Landscape Lighting Is Actually Designed
Good lighting is noticed as atmosphere, not as fixtures. The decisions that produce that are technical, and most of them are made before anything is installed.
Layers, not floodlights
Path lighting, uplighting on trees and architecture, and submerged pool lighting each do a different job. A single bright source flattens a yard; layered low-level sources give it depth after dark.
Glare is the usual mistake
Fixtures aimed where they can be seen directly are uncomfortable and make everything beyond them harder to see. Shielding, aiming, and placing sources out of sightlines is most of the craft.
Color temperature consistency
Mixing warm and cool fixtures makes a yard look assembled from parts. A consistent temperature, usually warm, is what makes lighting read as designed.
Transformers and wire runs
Low-voltage runs lose power over distance, so transformer placement and wire gauge determine whether the far end of the yard is as bright as the near end. This is planned, not improvised.
Fixtures that survive outside
Brass and copper age gracefully and last decades in this climate; cheaper housings corrode and fail, usually in the least accessible spot. The fixture cost difference is small next to the cost of replacing them.
Control and scheduling
Astronomic timers and zone control mean the lighting matches the season without anyone adjusting it, and lets the pool, path, and architectural zones run on different schedules.
